The Unique Challenge of Being a Goalie Parent
Goalie is the most specialized position in hockey. The equipment is more expensive, the training is more specialized, and the mental demands are unique.
When to Start Goalie-Specific Training
- Ages 6-8: Players should be playing all positions. This is not the time to specialize
- Ages 9-10: Light goalie-specific training (1x per week) can begin if they gravitate toward the position
- Ages 11-12: Regular goalie coaching (weekly) becomes important
- Ages 13+: Serious goalie development with dedicated coaching, camps, and video review
What Good Goalie Training Looks Like
Skating First
The best goalies are exceptional skaters. Many goalie coaches will tell you that 80% of goaltending is skating and movement.
The Equipment Question
- Buy used early on. Players under 10 are growing fast
- Proper fit matters more than brand.
- Invest in a good mask. Always buy new and buy quality

Managing Goalie Burnout
- Take breaks. Summer should include time away from hockey
- Play other sports.
- Watch your language. Focus on effort and improvement, not results
- Monitor their enjoyment. Regularly check in
